Custom 3D Printed Covers for Microscopes

Introduction

An internship project to design, model, and print a fitted cover for the two separate electronic microscope all the while adding a touch of personality to the covers. The process went from measurements and rough sketches to 3D modeling in Solidworks, to printing from an XYZ Da Vinci 3D Printer.

Scene and Ideation

The studio space is half machine shop and half workspace

There were two different microscope models to design for with different operations in how they adjusted sizing and area for the cover sit on. I needed precise measurements for both models to get a good fit while protecting the lenses.

Model Phase

From the measurements and rounds of ideation I went into designing in Solidworks. Initially I wanted to create a universal fit cover so that the design might be used for any future microscopes brought into the lab or needed in other offices.

One of the first successful prints. This version had some fit and finish issues to correct for a better fit. The model also was not universal for both microscopes so two models had to me made for a good fit.

I went on to create two purpose built designs to take heed of the very different dimensions of each microscope as well as the moving parts. I wanted these models to have some personality so giving them a sunglasses look would help them standout. These final CAD models also added in branding for the design studio
